What is trauma, really????
Trauma is what you experience when your mind and/or body experience something unexpected, disturbing, and or otherwise overwhelming (too much too soon that we might not even be fully aware of). When most people think of trauma, they imagine combat veterans coming back from war. But trauma can happen to people all the time through one experience or many experiences over time no matter who you are or your age:
Domestic abuse
Violence
Public humiliation
Car accidents
Bullying
Getting fired at work
Being the target of a hate crime
Witnessing something awful happen to someone else
Sexual assault and rape
Being raised by a narcissist or emotionally immature parent or caregiver
Medical health and treatment
Pregnancy/Birth
Relationships/Break ups/ Divorce
Grief
Generational trauma
…..and the list goes on!
People often hold trauma close and to themselves because let’s face it, it is not easy disclosing parts of ourselves to others! Maybe you have tried before and you weren’t believed, or you’re carrying a load of shame and guilt that you are afraid of judgement! Argh, have I been there before! This is why I hold this so important to my heart. I need to earn that right with you… to hold space in the chair across from you, to create a space that you can bring all of you and your wisdom, not feel rushed to share your story, but go at your own pace that you are comfortable with and let me help be your anchor through it all.
Having these experiences rather we want to use the T word or not can make us lose touch with who we are, lose hope and confidence.
